Easter always begins with emptiness: an empty tomb. Yet, the only reason there is emptiness, is because Jesus is risen. So he stepped out of the tomb and it was found empty. But, we often dislike the idea of emptiness because it connotes ‘a lack of’. Yet, emptiness has to be considered as an opportunity.
For every step we take forward, we leave something behind: we leave an empty spot behind and we step into another. We leave behind footprints, people, places, habits, attitudes, and assumptions. We therefore need to become ever conscious of emptiness, especially our own. Whether the emptiness arose as a result of sin, a loss, disappointment, or betrayal, emptiness presents us with an opportunity to stand before God.
Think about this: once the maximum inflating pressure is exceeded, a balloon will rupture and be destroyed. To receive new life therefore, there has to be space to hold it. Our emptiness is thus our chance to open the doors of our hearts to Jesus, the risen Lord, to establish His throne within. But, we ought to bear in mind again that there has to be space to receive anything new, and that may mean trading off some old things.
Simply put,
without emptiness, there can be no newness. So ask yourself, “do I have room enough to receive new things? If not, what can I let go?”.
