Reference text: Mark 9:41 – 50
An executive summary of the versus of interest in this text are:
If your hand or foot cause you to sin, cut them off. If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. For it is better to enter into the kingdom of God maimed than with both sets of hands, feet and eyes, waltz your way into hell.
That is a rather harsh reality. In fact, heavy hitting punches that seem to recommend extreme action. Yet, underlying this apparent extremism is the message “God has done all there is, but there is also much resting on your own shoulders. There is no suggestion of God’s involvement in the matter, it’s entirely on you – You cut off and pluck out: the hands, feet and eyes.
Beloved, there are times when you have to burn bridges, choke off supply and cut your access to those things that facilitate an easy route into sin. It won’t be easy because getting rid of a part of you that you may be so used to is comparable to cutting off a limb in the literal sense.
However, the benefit of the discomfort associated with such detachment, outweighs the long term losses.
