Jeremiah 17:7 Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD.
‘Trust’ as a legal term refers to an entity that manages assets for the benefit of another person called the beneficiary. Often the beneficiaries are entirely dependent on the decisions the Trust makes. Think of it as a near absolute surrender of control. It is interesting to note that, the ‘man’ described in the text, was not a weak man, but a man of valour or simply, a warrior. Thus, we see an acknowledgement of strength brought under subjection.
So the man described in Jeremiah 17:7, refers to one on an upward journey in trust. The first is to ‘trust in the Lord’ – in His character and in His promises. That connects one to a dimension of the blessing. However, beyond this point is another man whose ‘Trust is the Lord’. So even though the beneficiary has their role, their firm assurance is that the Trust will make management decisions that benefit them.
Hence, he stands on a higher rung as he has more to lose because it is indeed a risk to relinquish all decisions into the hands of another. For a gifted man, it can become an even harder decision to let go of control, even if it is to God. But for the man who seeks to be fully plugged in to the blessing, you often have to let go and let God.
