Among many other things, abuse and misuse are the product of the absence of understanding, especially of the true purpose of anything.
Jesus asked a couple of questions in the text we read today from Mark 4:21 ‘ Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick?’
The answer to this question arises primarily from prior knowledge of the question which should precede it ‘what is the purpose of a candle?’. Without that fundamental piece of the puzzle, one is likely to provide an inaccurate or inappropriate response to the initial question posed.
Abuse and misuse are therefore inevitable where true purpose is not known. The point of interest for us is therefore to consider the purpose of the people, things, gifts, systems and situations that surround us. If we have not, now may be a good time to do some searching.
