MANY CROWNS, MANY SCARS

The verse of focus in today’s Gospel is ‘

Then his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him (Mark 3:31).

The word that caught my attention however was ‘then‘ -referring to a specific period in time. When Jesus’ family arrived, the battle of words with the scribes was over. His relatives were therefore not witnesses of the fierce interactions that had gone on. Even upon arrival, they had to send for him due to the difficulty reaching him, likely because of the crowd.

They may have thought ‘look how well He is doing, seeing as He is surrounded by such a large audience. They had seen what looked liked a crown, but missed the preceding battle entirely.

We may often see men after battle carrying “the spoils of war”, but no visible battle scars. That is because while spoils are glaring, scars can be covered and very well hidden. Scars from sacrifice, scars from hardwork, scars from periods spent trusting God, or scars from betrayals from men.

Beloved, most battles scars are not readily put on display, but don’t be deceived, behind many crowns are likely many scars.
