A WALK THROUGH THE WILDERNESS

I have been following a documentary of the Exodus of Israel from Egypt to the promise land and it has been eye a learning experience. At the core of the story, one theme that makes it’s way into the fray of conversation is “the wilderness Experience” and the question “Why would God lead an entire nation through such treacherous terrain?”

The verse today from Hebrews 3:8 “do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness” gives a slight glimpse into the rationale:
Whatever God wanted to make out of the nation of Israel, could neither be done in Egypt nor in the promise land”.

Israel had too much History in Egypt, sad tales that had become part of the fabric of their very being. In contrast, they were expecting ‘milk and honey’ in the promise land and would have become comfortable because of that stability. Hence, the middle ground ‘the wilderness’

In the wilderness, values are tested, and so are appetites. Commitment, trust and focus become core subjects to ponder on. It is a place hard of training and formation, from where you may w ant to return to Egypt despite the bad history or expedite your transition to the promise land. Nonetheless, it is that place which takes ‘Egypt’ out of you, while preparing you for the destination of promise.

Beloved, don’t run away from the wilderness because although it is not a fun place to be, it is an essential part of our formation.
