You would expect that for someone with increasing popularity, the drive would have been to increase visibility and permeability even further. But with Jesus, we see an opposite response: he retreated to pray. The verse of interest today is this:
Luke 5:15-16 But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities. And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.
The more his fame spread, the more his audience increased. With that increasing audience, came greater demand on what he said, and what He was able to do. People came to draw from him. He therefore made conscious effort to ensure that there was water in the well.
He didn’t want His audience to come and meet a famous Jesus, but one Jesus from whom they could draw. Likewise, we also ought to keep filling our wells: our wells of knowledge, support, wisdom, and prayer. We need to stock up on all those areas others can draw from because only then will our fame correspond to impact. Men may come looking to draw water from your well, the question is “will they find any?”
