MORE THANKFUL OR MORE FEARFUL?

I am sure others have similar stories, but on my train journey this evening a thought came to mind ‘do you know you have made this journey over 600 times this year alone? And each time you have made it to and fro?’
That prompted a sense of appreciation in a way that I had not even considered.

Reading Psalm 124 today spoke volumes, and on its own, it was a call to ponder on the goodness of God:

Vs 1-4 If the Lord had not been on our side—let Israel say— if the Lord had not been on our side
when people attacked us, they would have swallowed us alive
when their anger flared against us;
the flood would have engulfed us,
the torrent would have swept over us,

Vs 5-8 the raging waters would have swept us away. Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth. Our soul has escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped. Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

The imagery of a vulnerable bird and the hidden snares of a hunter indeed paints an accurate picture because we will surely marvel at the traps laid before us and their frequency. The question thus becomes “if we could see all we have been and are delivered from, would we become more fearful or more thankful?
