Micah 5:2 "The LORD says, "Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are one of the smallest towns in Judah, but out of you I will bring a ruler for Israel, whose family line goes back to ancient times."
We are often marveled by many of the choices God seems to make and wonder:
- Why He resists the proud and raises the humble,
- Why He will ignore the Pharisees and Sadducees, to make do with fishermen and unknowns.
- Why He ignores royalty and opted to use a teenage virgin
- Why He rejected valiant warriors in preference for a shepherd boy
In these examples, we see an underlying theme “God has a soft spot for small things“. Small in context is not a function of size, but in the display of glory because many “big things” tend to carry their own version of glory. Thus through “small things”, God’s presence, might and glory can be greatly magnified.
Don’t get things the wrong way round:
God is not intimidated by our rising and greatness, He lifts men.
He is not afraid of our gain of influence, wealth or fame, He gives all that.
His concern is rather about the state of our hearts in the midst of greatness.
So here is the work around:
“You can be great and mighty in the sight of men, but don’t forget to remain small in the sight of God”. That way, His glory can be magnified in your vessel.
