We read a list of seven men of repute, leaders in their day: Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate, Herod the Tetrarch and his brother Philip, Lysanias and the two high priests Annas and Caiaphas. Yet, the statement following this honourable list is what is profound “the word of God came to John, son of Zechariah in the wilderness”.
You could wonder why God skips seven leaders to find a man in the wilderness. The simplest answer to that is because “He can”. This was not about maintaining political correctness or pleasing an audience, this was about the agenda of God for that time and season.
While John received the assignment of preaching repentance, each of those men, in one way or another, did find themselves woven into the story of Jesus, albeit in differing capacities. Here is the message :
God considers the suitability of vessels for the assignments he has in mind. Titles are therefore not the qualifying criteria to be drafted into kingdom service, you can ask Mary and John. It is the vessel that is both ready and suitable for the master’s use.
God makes men, but he always starts with what they have.
