RUN YOUR OWN RACE

An interesting incident happened on my way home this evening. In anticipation for a storm, I was cycling home rather quickly only to be passed by another cyclist. That got my competitive juices running so I quickly responded by changing gears, catching up just before we got to a crossing. In my mind, I was waiting for both of us to cross the road, continuing along the same bath so I could whizz past them. To my surprise, they made a turn after crossing.

Such are some the races many of us are running. We become so invested striving quickly to catch up to those ahead of us, with the intention to rise above them. Only forgetting that just because they are immediately ahead of us does not mean they are headed the same way as we are.

You will be disappointed if all your efforts resulted in the running of a race that was not intended for you to run, or aiming at a target that was not your to aim for in the first place. In 2nd Timothy 4:7, St Paul writes ‘I have finished the race’ – a race he identified in Acts 20:24 as ‘his race’. So we also must run our own races, not because we are chasing after someone else, but because we have uniquely found our races.
