One thing that makes something a trap is it’s obscurity. What is clearly obvious is often not a trap, but there lies at the heart of it a surprise that is not expected. Since even the most attentive of individuals can still become entrapped, for those who are distracted by other things, the chances of falling into a trap are multiplied significantly.
Thus, Jesus’ warning comes at this time
"But be on your guard, so that your hearts will not be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that this day will not come on you suddenly, like a trap "(Luke 21:34).
There is a way the weights of life can disrupt one’s focus from the things that really matter. You can become so locked down by instant pleasure, gratification, and excitement; by the weight of responsibility, the promises of fame, fortune and power; that you ignore fundamentals and core rudiments of life.
It won’t just be ‘that day’ which will catch you by surprise, many moments will also pass you by because you are so plugged in that you see nothing else. What you think requires your fiercest focus, could simply be a distraction from what really matters. Don’t get lost in the wrong pursuit.
