“THANK YOU FOR YOUR LIGHT”

Following daylight savings, the sun tends to rise later and sets way earlier. Hence, the onset of darkness can catch anyone out. There is a path that I sometimes use enroute to work because it cuts my travel by a couple of minutes. However, as it passes through the town park, there is no lighting along the 200 meter stretch. One obvious finding has been the number of people I have met along the path walking in pitch darkness.

I, therefore, cycle at a slow pace behind and at a distance so the lights on my cycle lights the path ahead, and there is a noticeable increase in their walking pace. After doing so yesterday, the pedestrian ahead made a comment “thank you for your light”.

Light is not just physical, but it can be expanded to encompass anything that provides visibility or clarity to allow focused interaction with the world around us and the things in it. Thus, while we may not have realised, “light” is celebrated in many forms – whether it is dispensed in excellence, kindness, knowledge, guidance or even as physical light. However, we ought to be discerning as not all light should be celebrated or interacted with, because some bear inherent ability to corrupt.

For your part, the charge is clear “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to God'(Mt 5:16). While some will be grateful for this light, others will not. Nonetheless, let your light still shine because your lamp belongs on a lampstand and not hidden under a basket.

However little light you think you bear, it may be enough for someone to take their first step, so let it shine.
