Reference text: Mark 10:17-30
In the Gospel today, the young man who was in conversation with Jesus had kept all the requirements of the law since his Youth, and that was an achievement worthy of applause. Yet, Jesus highlighted that something else was required: ‘a sell off of all his assets and giving the money to the poor’. That to him, was a hard decision hence his crest- fallen face when he walked off.
While we may prefer to do things that are within our strength to do, Jesus asks of us more than we think we can give. We will often be asked to do difficult things. Not impossible things, but those things that push and challenge the limits and frontiers of our lives.
All that God asks of us are possible things, but they are hard to do. Those things which are impossible for us to do are those which are His to do. Unfortunately, some of us want Him doing both the possible and impossible. That is not how our partnership works. He can do all, but ‘God will not do by miracle what is ours to do by responsibility.’
There are somethings for which you don’t need a miracle, instead a change in attitude or approach, a period of learning or even giving things up. We need to live a life that is giving because Jesus does not benefit from our following of him – we do.
