The exact words of Jesus when he noticed his disciples turning children away from him were “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God” (Mark 10:14b). It may appear the trend to go off the notion that the kingdom of God belongs to children besides ‘as many as believed, were given power to become children of God.
This may be the outcome we arrive at using only the one scripture as an anchor. However, there have been many other checkpoints through scripture that offer further context and serve as a lens for moderating this notion. In the first letter of Peter, he wrote: ‘as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,'(2:2). These words were in complement to those of St Paul in Galatians 4:1 “Now I say, as long as the heir is a child, he does not differ at all from a slave, although he is owner of everything,”
Therefore, it is not literally to children that the kingdom of God belongs. Jesus’ words were ” to such belong the kingdom of God”. This refers to those who hold the disposition of children: by their openness, curiosity, fearlessness to approach, trust, and sense of wonder. That disposition, which offers a teachable template, is what Jesus commends.
Don’t be deceived into thinking of literal children, immature and often bearing no sense of responsibility, because no one will confidently entrust generational legacies into the hands of children, it’s too much a risk to take. You have to grow up.
