AN UNCHANGING STANDARD OF REFERENCE

As a society, it was as if Solomon had encountered us on his journeys when he wrote this verse in Proverbs 21:2a “everything a man does is right in his own eyes’. This is because to us, everything we do is indeed acceptable, and everything we believe to be right, has to become the new normal.

We are a generation that prides ourselves in pacesetting, and a lot of firsts. The first to do that, say that or build that. Hence, we reckon we are doing right. However, the only reason we deem all things to be right is because we have looked at them solely from our single point of view, without a standardized reference point.

Whenever students sit an exam, whatever answers they give are right to them at the point of sitting the exam, and they have valid reason to believe so. It is only when those answers are placed alongside the preset standard of the marking scheme that variabilities in expectation are revealed.

Our reference point, therefore, has to be that of the God who changes not, lest we think the goal posts keep shifting. Behold, we have come in the volume of the book to do His will, not just what is right to us because all things, including us, we’re created for His pleasure. We can do a lot of things right, and still not have done what is expected. This should not cause us to fear, but rather constrain us to continually pursue alignment in God.
