A look at the Gospel today reveals the names of some of the women who were involved in the ministry of Jesus. Of particular note and central to today’s discussion is the mention of Joanna, whose husband was the manager of Herod’s household (Luke 8:3). While that was significant proximity to a strong opposition to the ministry of Jesus due to family affiliations, Joanna opted to follow and support Jesus.
That gave us the hint that ‘you do not have to follow anyone and anything blindly, and that you can make a personal choice’. This explains why Joshua could say to the entire nation of Israel: ‘You have a range of options available to you and I really don’t mind what your choice will be since it’s entirely up to you, but I have made mine – as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15)’.
Beloved, salvation, and everything that comes with it, is like access to a hefty bank account with two signatories, one being Jesus and the other, our very own selves. Jesus’ part has been completed with a permanent signature. What remains is every individual’s decision to sign their part and claim what has been made available. But we each get to make a choice.
