Matthew 23:16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
To have the title of ‘a guide’ in itself presupposes one who knows their way around. In the very least, we’ll enough to be able to guide others. Guides are often supposed to point out the way to, and are expected to be familiar with the content, places or destination in question. Thus, in the meaning of the word, there are inherent expectations.
There are minimum requirements to occupy certain positions, hence it is a bad report for ‘a guide’ to be called blind. It reflects a lack of effort and competency to occupy the office which their title suggests. Think about this: how could a blind guide: [lacking perception, awareness, or judgment] lead the way?
Even though Jesus uses this description in a harsh rebuke to the scribes and pharisees, it is a unique way of calling out our lack of preparedness. If you are to be a guide, knowledge, competence and mastery are expected of you. The same is applicable across every sphere of endeavour. Whatever you acclaim to be then, you must be ready to pay the price so you can meet the expectations required.
Don’t get called out for being a blind guide – a vessel not ready for the assignment they hold.
