FIND YOUR AUDIENCE

Reference text: Luke 1

The text capturing the visitation of Mary to Elizabeth always springs up new facets, two of these are explored in the discourse today:

1. Luke 1:24,26 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months,... And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

Mary’s visitation was predicated on the timeline of Elizabeth’s pregnancy because  the angel Gabriel was not sent to her until the 6th month of that pregnancy. This was a reason Zechariah was struck dumb, because his unbelief was not going to be the basis to delay God’s timelines. Thus, we see that element of ‘interdependence’, where the new chapter of an individual’s story may be founded on the foundation of another story.

That is why we continually and consciously desire to become all that God has purposed for us to become. Not because we are just ambitious, but because there are doors we must open so others don’t have to struggle, peaks we must attain so others are motivated to reach, the words we must speak to encourage, and the resources we must accrue so God’s Kingdom and our society can advance. Our stories are not just about us.

2. Luke 1:43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

To an outsider watching, Elizabeth was speaking gibberish and her words made no sense. However, between her and Mary, the conversation was crystal clear, no hidden meaning. So just because some people don’t understand, doesn’t always mean the message is incoherent. Instead, they may not be the right audience for that message. Before you lose your message therefore, make sure you find your audience.
