Jesus who was a master at using parables to weave intricate stories goes direct in his address today. After realizing that large swaths of people had followed along and kept looking for Him, he revealed the state of their heart to them. These are captured in John 6:26
'Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.'
Unfortunately, our pursuit of God in today’s world has turned Him into someone who exists only to satisfy our needs. In effect, we are not really looking for God, we are looking for something from God. This same mindset has translated into our relationships with men, such that is is now rare to find genuine relationships where the objective is not self preservation or personal gain.
The motives of an individual’s pursuit, whether towards God or other men, are always worth examining because man Inherently has tendencies to lean towards their own self indulgences. The question Jesus asks, is therefore one we can also be asked “what are the motivations behind our faith?”
Beloved, clarify your motives: are you looking for God, or are you looking for something from God?
