Matthew 13:54 He returned to Nazareth, his hometown. When he taught there in the synagogue, everyone was amazed and said, “Where does he get this wisdom and the power to do miracles?”
Whenever new Olympians emerge and produce praiseworthy results, often unmatched or unexpected, we might hear comments like ‘they came out of nowhere’. The real response to that question is ‘no one just arrives’. In the years preceding those crowning moments, whether in sports, in destiny or in life, are you aware of the hours that have gone into honing those skills and competencies? The sweat and tears? The discipline and dedication in prayer, word study and in fastings? No one really just arrives.
Beyond what is seen then, should remain something unseen, because that becomes the message which can be shared. Hence, we realise in the Gospel today that while Jesus’ townsfolk were convinced they knew in detail who was: his origins and native roots, they had a question to clarify “where did this man get all these things: where and how?”
Those questions are suggestive of inexplicable gaps that have to be bridged in the story of our lives, gaps that we are often unable to answer concisely. Regardless of all the quantifiable and objective facts, somethings do not seem to add up, ‘an extra’ that is hard to explain. Those gaps are what confirm that our sufficiency is not of ourselves, but of God.
I don’t know about you, but I am not confident enough to explain every step, decision or rationale for the opportunities and challenges I have had through life. Those are gaps I cannot fill because it has surely taken more than myself to bring me where I am, that is why I am always have a heart of gratitude to God. Perhaps, now is a good moment for you to do same: “
Thank you God, for your goodness towards me”
