Isaiah 10:15 But can the ax boast greater power than the person who uses it? Is the saw greater than the person who saws? Can a rod strike unless a hand moves it? Can a wooden cane walk by itself?
The questions presented in today’s text present points for consideration, presenting images that we can picture rather easily: an axe, a saw, a rod and a wooden cane. These are all tools, hence it does not matter how polished, or how expensive they are; their worth is proven only in the hands of the one who uses them as intended.
Such is the story of any man in the hands of God. We dare not make the same boasts as Assyria: ‘By the strength of my hand I have done this, and by my wisdom, because I have understanding’ (Isaiah 10:13a). We are always reminded in these words of Saint Paul ‘But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us (2 Corinthians 4:7).
Apart from God, it might seem you have it all figured out, but that is a facade and a mirage. God holds all things together, and without him, nothing is. Let all your boasting, therefore, be in the Lord and let him be the anchor of what you call ‘, your strength’. All you are, and all you have, are because God is.
