A HOUSE DIVIDED AGAINST ITSELF

One of the most used scriptures in discussing the area of agreement or division is Amos 3:3 which reads “Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?” Thus, we identify that at the very foundation of a walk together is the agreement to do so. That is the starting point.

And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand (Mark 3:25)

In speaking to His audience today, these words of Jesus appear to run through the discourse. To clarify that “the house” in context is not in reference to a physical building, an alternative version renders these words as” a family splintered by feuding [disputes, clashing, bickering] will fall apart.

That is what we see in the garden after the fruit had been eaten -Adam’s choice was to blame the woman for giving him to eat, and that was the first major crack that happened in that house. The house at that moment was divided against itself and that crack only widened in the next generation when we consider the story of Cain and Abel in a like manner.

Beloved, there are conditions that keep a house together, in the very least there must be:

  • Unity of Purpose
  • Alignment of Vision, and
  • Convergence of destination

Without these basics nailed however, what one gets is an unhealthy culture of blame and finger pointing that can break any house apart. Note however, that the emphasis is NOT on ‘sameness of purpose and vision, because each one has his own mandate to fulfil.
