Mark 10:17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?
When a question is repeated, one of two things is true: either the hearer did not hear and understand the question well enough to answer right, or the one who asked is not fully satisfied with the response they got.
When the young man approached Jesus, he was seeking one thing ‘eternal life’, and it seemed he was ready to do whatever was required to obtain it. Yet, when Jesus named the price: ‘sell all you have, give it to the poor and come follow me’. Even with the guarantee that he would have treasure in heaven, the man went away sad because as scripture reported, he had many possessions. If he obtained the eternal he sought, we are not told.
It is unclear what price he was expecting to pay, but perhaps he expected it would be one he could easily pay from his many possessions. However, it does not work that way. Since we did not write the script called ‘life’ , nor any chapter in the document ‘obtaining eternal life’, we cannot set the price to be paid.
Like this young man, sometimes we come to God with both the questions to ask and the answers we expect to receive. We set the time line, the content and context of His responses, down to the very finer details. We tend to forget too often that “He is a King, and He is Sovereign”; and that He is under no obligation to only give us the answers we desire. Beloved, don’t come to God with your own answers, if you are approaching Him to ask a question.
