A BLANK CHEQUE

DAY 118/366

If the resources of the giver of a cheque are unlimited, then it is possibke for one to write any amount on a black cheque. However, despite the fact that one has a blank cheque, it is highly likely that only a handful of financial institutions will have the capacity to fulfill the request on the cheque.

In other words, even a blank cheque has some conditions that affect cashing it out. In the Gospel today, Jesus seems to give a blank cheque “anything you ask in my name, I will do it (John 14:14)”. That is exciting news which presents us with the chance to ask for anything. However, this blank cheque does have a condition ‘that the father may be glorified in the son'(vs 13).

Whatever therefore we request from God, has to have a place in bringing honour to Him. That honour could be in the form of other men seeing and giving glory to God, or our very own lives becoming the testaments of the glory of God. Sometimes we do not receive the things we ask, not because God cannot grant them, bu because in the end, receiving them does not, or will not bring honour to God.

Everytime we ask God anything in prayer, He asks us a question in return: “if I give you what you desire, will I be glorified?” That question is for us to answer because it reveals to us the state of our hearts.
