IT PAYS TO DO GOOD

DAY 105

REFERENCE: Acts 9:31-42

Acts  9:39 Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.

While we are not saved ‘by good works’, we are saved ‘unto good works’, such that the word of God invites us to live considering more than just ourselves. Good works encompass efforts both in kingdom advance and societal impact or transformation.

Many who purposed to sincerely do good have however been stung quite badly. From being taken advantage of, betrayed, being cheated or being unappreciated. Doing good in the current era therefore has to be accompanied by a great deal of discernment and caution. In fact, many resolve to do no further good because often times, those who are recipients of good deeds do not consider the perspectives of those who offer to do good.

Nonetheless, similar to the centurion whose case was made known to Jesus by the Jewish authorities because of his good works, as we read the story of Dorcas today, we are reminded to keep doing good because there are some corridors or arenas where the only thing that will speak for you are your ‘good works’. Not just how much you received from others, but how much you have also given. But do good works with discernment.
