DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU NEED TO?

DAY 97

Nicodemus found himself sat in a master class under the feet of Jesus discussing deep matters. In the course of this discussion, he asks the same question Mary asked ‘How can these things be?’ (John 3:9) It is at this point that Jesus makes an interesting remark in John 3:10 when he answered,

You are a teacher of Israel and you don’t know these things?

Jesus was at this point not speaking just to the man who had come by night, but to the office he occupied ‘as a teacher of Israel’. In that seat, he could not afford to be ignorant of somethings. The same question is thrown to us: “are you a ‘Christian, businessman, preacher, husband, wife, student, farmer,97 fisherman, cleaner, teacher, banker and not know’ these things?’

‘These things’ which Jesus highlighted, refer to bodies of knowledge and requisite understanding necessary to sustain the office one occupies. Without them, you are a skeleton or castle built on sand and won’t have much ground to be anchored on when the winds and waves hit.

Do you know what you need to know in that office you stand? Do you know what makes a good student or Christian? Have you understood the rudiments of productivity and integrity as a businessman? As a husband or wife, have you understood love through the lens of the word or leaned the wisdom that sustains a marriage? Do you understand the content of your profession or are you just strolling along? Do you know what you need to know?

Let’s not become proud and boastful, bearing nothing but titles and offices. Instead, let us commit ourselves to acquiring what we are required to know about the offices we occupy.
