DAY 91

The actions of the soldier’s in today’s Gospel account is littered with red flags. They were not threatened, they were rather offered money to tell a lie which they accepted. However, it is the content of the lie they were made to tell that revealed a great desperation to save their own skin. This was the lie they were to tell “
his disciples came at night and stole the body while we slept (Mt 28:13)".
In Matthew 27:66, the Jewish leaders had requested for the tomb to be sealed and a squad of soldiers stationed for the specific task of watching the tomb. But here were the same soldiers boldly marketing their incompetence by sleeping at post while the body of Jesus was ‘stolen’. They were not overpowered in a fight, tricked or drugged, they just fell asleep at post.
At times, we forget we are responsible in part for the things entrusted to us: our life, our gifts, our relationships, our careers, among others. We are like drivers behind the wheels of a moving car. Should we fall asleep in the wrong places, we will crash. We therefore cannot simply remain aloof and not care about the things over which we have been given responsibility.
Remember # ‘it is required of stewards that they be found faithful’ (1 Cor 4:2) – faithful to the task entrusted to them because it is through those avenues, you obtain your rewards. And God can trust you with more.
