MANAGING EMOTIONS

DAY 89/366

On the good Friday, the Gospel according to John is read. I tend to listen to this Gospel with my eyes closed because of the    ability to picture the scenes along the journey to the cross. It is such a moving scenary that it always leaves a heavy imprint each time.

On this occasion, the dialogue captured between Jesus, the high priest and the soldier standing by, caught my attention. This was it:

John 18:21-23 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded. “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”

I am convinced had the soldier heard these words before sticking Jesus, he would have held back. But he rode on the wave of emotions in the heat of the moment and struck him. There are many occasions when like this soldier, we respond in our emotion even without discerning the full picture. Possessing little knowledge, we act hastily only to realise we have not acted appropriately.

He who is first to act in any matter is not always the one who is right, it is he who responds appropriately that is preferred.  Your emotions are part of your nature, given to you for reason. However, do not let these emotions drive all you do because “It is better to be patient than powerful. It is better to win control over yourself than over whole cities (Prov 16:32)
