“MY FATHER” OR “OUR GOD”

DAY 74/366

John 8:54 Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’

I find it interesting how ‘God’ has so many facets such that unless one makes the conscious effort to plunge deeper, all the knowledge they possess about this God remain as a drop in the ocean. In the discussion with Jesus today, he tells his audience ‘I refer to God as “my father”, you say “our God”. The difference is ‘ I know Him, but you do not”

Our relationship with God is therefore one of knowledge, that bridges distance. In other words, the more of God we know, the closer we come. One’s expectation of a father excludes many things, among them ‘anger, wrath, and judgement’. Yet, God is all that and more.

Until we step beyond only the aforementioned attributes we know of this God, to see Him as father, the facets expressed in His fatherhood : Love, supply, kindness, security, assurance, identity – will seem far from our camps. Not because they are not present in God, but because we have not known Him in that manner. Can you get lost in the gaze of God as father?
