DAY 58/366

Jeremiah 18:18 They said, “Come, let’s make plans against Jeremiah; for the teaching of the law by the priest will not cease, nor will counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophets. So come, let’s attack him with our tongues and pay no attention to anything he says.”
The people in Jeremiah’s day thought ‘let’s make these plans because afterall, nothing can happen.’ They proposed in their conclave that nothing would change should Jeremiah be out of the picture. The word of God, the wisdom of the wise and the prophecies would still come. In fact, they so expected nothing to change that the very small likely outcomes of their actions were ignored.
They were so hung up to the big things, that could happen that they didn’t pay any attention to the small things. In the very least, it was as though they had seared that consciences with hot iron (1 Tim 4:2) leaving us to actually wonder, ‘what does it take to arrive, in a state where one is not pricked in their conscience?
When men lose their conscience, out the window goes every moral compass: everything becomes fair and can be done, and there is no boundary between good and evil. Everything goes.
It is even more interesting to explore The choice of weapon ” let’s attack him with our words. It can be fascinating what can be done with words, so much that there are legal ramifications for saying or writing unproven statements. Words carry so much weight that for a prophet of Jeremiah’s calibre, they were deemed sufficient to achieve the intended damage. So the next time you have any words to offer, check their weighting.
