SPIRITUAL AMNESIA

DAY 54/366

Matthew 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Today, the righteousness of the pharisees is presented as a yardstick that must be exceed if anyone was to make it into the kingdom of heaven. These men were devout, disciplined and masters at following routine. Yet, Jesus was emphatic in highlighting that if one’s deeds became their evidence for seeking entry into the kingdom of heaven, they had missed it.

Unfortunately, many aim to hide behind the banner of their deeds to ‘bribe’ or force the hand of God along certain lines. We seem to have what we might describe as ‘spiritual amnesia’. We seem to have forgotten that the price paid for access into the kingdom was the cross. Our prayers, our fastings, and word study of course matter, but in themselves, they are but our token to show our commitment.

Let’s however not convince ourselves that those are the things that bring the results we see and desire. Without the Cross, where heaven and earth meet, we really have no case. No amount of ‘doing’ on our part is sufficient to pay the price Jesus paid. It’s up to us therefore, to walk to the Cross, to sit at the foot of the Cross, to Behold the Cross and stand behind it. That,  is where our victory arises from.
