DAY 351
John 1:22 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
Messengers had come to John looking for answers, and in doing so, they had in mind a few people into whose mould he would fit perfectly. Their options included Elijah or another of the Prophets. To both, John responds, No! Of note was their insistence on getting an answer to relay back and a right answer was therefore dependent on what John knew about himself.
An oh, did he had to know. The moulds he was presented with were not regular moulds, they were those of men who had walked or would walk in influence: Elijah or Jesus himself. It would have been an easier fit to slip into any one of these, but John knew ‘He was the voice crying out in the desert-prepare the way of the Lord.
Beloved, until you come to the full realisation of who you are, many alternatives will seem appropriate, and those options won’t be bad either. It is only that in pursuing those, you will have translated yourself out of the very purpose for your existence. It can be a struggle to stay defined to ‘who you are’ when you look through God’s lense, even when other avenues seem more appealing.
But you have to bear in mind that it is in that obedience your flourishing lies.
