WHAT IS AT STAKE?

DAY 320

Luke 17:27 People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

In today’s Gospel, we are taken a step back into the beginnings with the story of Noah and the ark. We read that in those days, despite many warnings, men continued to eat, drink, were marrying and being given in marriage. Were these activities wrong? By no means, they were part of the life of the people. The only problem was where these were meant to be ranked as far as priorities go.

Therefore, the question that should be answered is ‘what is at stake?’ This should be the core message which guides every prioritisation. What stands to be lost when something is not done, and is the replacement activity enough to offset the deficit?

Anytime we choose between two thing, we have prioritised. Whether consciously or unconsciously therefore, we have temporarily acknowledged an understanding of what is at stake. But this is something we often pay no real attention to and simply make choices.

We are therefore reminded to take a brief moment to think about this on our next prioritisation task: ‘what is at stake?’
