DAY 306

Matthew 25:40 The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
A bicycle is designed to run on two wheels. Through skill, one might be able to make some progress with one wheel, but it is only a matter of time before a realisation of the futility of such a venture sets in.
When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, the summary of the commandments were given in these words in Luke 10:27: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself”.
While many are hooked to the one wheel of love of God, oblivious to men, others are solely head deep in doing good for men, the love of neighbour. Each of these branches serves a profitable purpose, but in isolation, neither is sufficient to make balanced progress.
It takes an understanding of the love of God to love your neighbour, and on many occasions, our love for God is presented on the plate of our love of neighbour. Let us therefore not become one-wheeled lovers, rather let us fully embrace both dimensions: love of God and love of neighbour, for in them lies balance and completeness.
John simplifies it so ‘If someone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see?“(1 Jn 4:20)
