WHAT, AND HOW TO HEAR

DAY 287

Luke 11:28 Blessed rather are those who hear those who hear the word and keep it.

To be able to keep the word, one must first be in a position to hear it. However, there are dynamics to hearing. Among the many statements Jesus made, one that was fairly common was ‘he that has ears, let him hear’. In his teaching ministry,
two scriptures on hearing stand out

The first is Mark 4:24a Then He said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear”. This relates to ‘what to hear’, where the emphasis is on careful control of the content that reaches us. A lot of sound is sent our way, but we don’t respond to them all because we can filter out many of those deemed unwanted. We are charged to be a lot more proactive in this domain.

The second is Luke 8:18a ‘So carefully consider how you hear’.
There is ‘a how’ to hearing many things, including the Word of God. Ignoring this would very like lead to frustration and disappointment because hearing wrongly will not give what is heard the faith or assurance necessary to produce results.

How then do you hear the word of God?

  • Hear as one who is being taught – you should never become too familiar with the Word – it’s freshness/newness is renewed at each reading.
  • Hearing must be mixed with faith to generate profit/results (Heb 2:4)
  • Hearing must be balanced – the whole counsel of God else you become ‘a part heavy’ believer (Acts 20:27)
