THE MAN BEHIND THE WORKS

DAY 279

Luke 10:13, Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

‘Mighty works’ are indeed a sermon in themselves, for they carry in the the potential to initiate repentance. But as we see in the Gospel, not all men are moved by mighty works. Chorazin and Bethsaida saw many mighty works yet remained unrepentant, prompting a rebuke by Jesus.

The Gospel has many layers, one of which Paul describes in his letter to the Romans 1:16 as the ‘power of God’ unto Salvation. So mighty works are a dimension of the Gospel. Unfortunately, many are stuck in that domain.

At the bedrock of the Gospel is the message of a person, Jesus. And often, the power of the Gospel is made evident in the simplicity of the message. It is a message that sounds too simple to be true, but believing it produces a transformation that can make any man a wonder to behold.

By all means don’t despise mighty works, they are sermons in themselves. But ensure you have a grasp of the knowledge of the one man who sits at the heart of the Gospel.

Mighty works may not change you, but the one behind them can certainly do – his name is Jesus.
