GOD FIRST

DAY 277

Luke 9:62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

We read about two interesting groups of people in the Gospel: the first set meet Jesus and his disciples along the road and offer to join the ministry train. They boldly declare ‘I will follow you’.  The question I ask about this group is ‘with what will they follow? Their own strength and skill? or their personal motivation and goals? You really have to be helped if you are to follow well.

The second group were those who heard the clarion words of invitation ‘follow me’ – yet, what followed was a string of excuses why their response could not be immediate. There was something they had to sort out first, and that took precedence over any other thing, including their invitation to follow.

Regardless then of the group anyone falls into, ‘whoever sets his hand to the plough and keeps looking back is deemed unfit for the kingdom of God. When we do choose to say yes to God, He must be first indeed for He is a jealous. Our eyes must be set on Him, and our obedience ever ready to align.
