REORIENTATION

DAY 264

Matthew 9:9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.

Whenever God interrupts our journeys, many of us go up in arms wondering what He is up to. Because knowing God, he won’t immediately clarify many the things he says or does, it is your obedience to the first instruction that sets the ball rolling to knowing what else He wants to do.

Jesus finds Matthew at the tax booth, and similar to the invitation offered to Peter and Andrew in their fishing boats, He tells Matthew ‘follow me’. Sunsequently, in the same manner as the brothers, he abandons his post and follows Jesus.

In both of these instances, it might seem that Jesus’ invitation meant the jobs they were doing were not important, but don’t get it wrong. Both men were at post, only that in eyes of God there weren’t doing what He desired them to, there was more for them. The interruption was therefore to reorient them.

The skills they had gained in their respective roles were applicable in their new post: ‘catching men’ and Matthew presenting a record of the life of Jesus. God’s interruptions are not terminations, they are often to reorient us if we pay attention.
