WHAT ARE YOU IN IT FOR?

DAY 231

Reference text: Joshua 24:14-29

The words of Joshua in today’s text are ones we are familiar with. In fact, one verse in particular has become a text of choice: ‘

but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord'(Josh 24:15b)

When one reads further, the rest of the nation of Israel also make a similar claim, however, it differs much from that of Joshua. The people of Israel made their decision on the basis of what they had received from God hence made up their mind only after reminding themselves of, and repeating the marvels God had done for them.

We are sometimes no different from them as many of us are in with God only because of what we stand to gain from him. Even our prayer requests are littered with only the needs we have. So here is a question, “if all our needs are met, would we have any other reason for communion with God?

We may now understand why men tend to pull further away from God the more their prayers are answered and their needs met. Can you make a decision to stay in communion with God because of who He is and not just because of what He gives? Beloved, until we migrate past ‘a contract-with-God’ mindset, into the fellowship dimension, our depths in God will remain shallow.
