MAKING A BAD DEAL

DAY 223

Matthew 16:26 What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

When making a business deal, even a novice would attempt to look at all the crucial elements likely to guarantee profit. Negotiations therefore, often go back and forth until all parties involved come to some kind of compromise. While the underlying structures in the long run may show one party benefiting more, the initial agreement is one which sells a win-win idea.

We read about an interesting transaction today and what is on offer is ‘the whole world’. You can let your imagination define the scope of what is included in this deal. Interestingly, this deal is deemed profitable only on one condition:

Gaining the whole world is profit only when your soul does not take a hit

Thus we extrapolate: ‘Whatever you gain in this world, regardless of its worth or the pedestal to which it elevates you, if it came at the cost of a deadened conscience, the sacrifice of your peace and a breakdown of relationship between you and the author of your life, you have secured a bad deal.

We tend to make these big trade offs unconsciously because nothing else seems to matter when the whole world is on offer. But in our quest to gain the world, let us be careful about the things we part with.
