DAY 209

Exodus 20:19 You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
Mind you, the gifts of God are spread throughout his body, and it takes a desire to connect to other parts of the body to receive from, and share in the gifts and dimensions those parts wield. Thus, in 1 Corinthians 12:31, before the sermon on love, Paul writes ‘covet earnestly the greater gifts’. Thus, there was a place for healthy desire, particularly, where what is desired is required in one’s growth and the fulfilment of their kingdom assignment.
A different kind of ‘coveting’ is however highlighted in the book of Exodus. It is one characterised by selfishly desiring and attempting to acquire. This kind of coveting arises in response to a number of scenarios:
- when one does not know the assignment they are on earth to accomplish;
- when one does not know what they need to fulfil that assignment;
- when one does not know what they already have to fulfil that assignment
Knowing the answers to the above questions can shape ones pursuits immensely. It will strangle unhealthy coveting and competition. When you’re building a structure with metal, it’s no use fighting over timber with another because you will expend energy for a resource that will serve little purpose in the task you have to accomplish.
So beloved, identify the purpose for your creation, then you can aggregate what you have and know exactly what you need to accomplish that purpose. Else, you will covet all the things you do not need.
