WATCH OUT FOR DISTRACTIONS

DAY 146

Peter receives a rather sharp rebuke when he attempts to ask Jesus about what plans He had for John. His question seemed to be a rather innocent: ‘Lord, what about him?(Jn 21:21b)” Jesus’ response is even more interesting. He looks squarely at Peter and tells him ‘If I want him to live until I come back, what concern is that of yours? You follow me!”(John 21:22b)

This prompted a bit of a smile from me while reading it because it was a nice of way for Jesus to tell Peter: ‘ ‘my friend, I recommend you mind your own business’. Instead of turning your attention to what I am or want to do in, and with the life of another man, focus on your walk with me. You follow me.

We have grown up in a world where we have often been taught that the only way to ‘become’ is to follow in the ways, methods and template of another person. Such has been the permeative nature of such lessons expressed without balance and clarity that many have found themselves following in steps they had no business heading towards.

What God wants to do with you, may seem similar to that of another person, but you can be certain that many requirements and rudiments of that journey will be unique solely to you.

Therefore, as much as the journeys of others can become sources of inspiration for us, let us not allow them to become distractions. Let’s keep following Jesus.
