OVERDEPENDENCE ON SELF

DAY 92

Reference text: Matthew 26:14-27:66

Peter weighed himself against every other man and was convinced and so declared” “Even if everyone else deserts you, I will never desert you.”(Matthew 26:33)

Jesus would have looked kindly at Peter, with a smile across  his face and said these words to Peter “I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.”(vs 34)

However, Peter was insistent “No! “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!”(vs 35) It appeared his bravado rubbed on the other disciples who all vowed the same.

Yet, when Jesus was arrested, it took two servants and a bystander for Peter to deny any knowledge of the man called Jesus.

Beloved, whenever we make claims, we have a firm basis on which we set them. We often base  them on our own capacity to do, an overdependence on the self. When this self is pushed, it’s real nature emerges and we realise how very little grounding we actually have.

We might look on what we have, our own abilities and capacity, and become convinced that we are able to do ALL.

But unless we are helped of God, we will simply fall into a pool of finite and limited possibilities.
