Genesis 17:9 Further, God said to Abraham, “As for you [your part of the agreement], you shall keep and faithfully obey [the terms of] My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations.
I will make you an exceeding great nation, Kings will come out of you. I will give you the entire land of Canaan. I will make you exceedingly fruitful.
We read the short passage above in the context of today’s text and we notice a very lopsided conversation: almost as though two men have to bear a load but one man is doing all the muscle work while the other takes a stroll in the park.
Interestingly, such were the terms of Abraham’s covenant with God. God would take care of all the heavy lifting: the making, the doing, the establishing, the giving and so forth. However, as there always is a token from the corridors of man, God gives us something to do ‘ Your part of the contract,” God told him, “is to obey its terms (Gen 17:9)
Yes. In many of life’s situation, the doing is already completed, and the results already known because has done it all. However, it’s manifestation requires a token of our obedience. This might seem a small token, but it is one that is fundamentally hard to execute.
Obedience gas in its requirements an abandonment of one’s own will to take up that of another. if there is anything man detests, it is to have no control over their own affairs. To be in a place where all we ever do is ‘ whatever God tells us’. Yet, obedience is the token of choice, and thus it holds such a special place in the heart of God.
