DAY 85

When Jesus received the news that Lazarus was ill, he was located about 20 miles from Bethany. By all accounts therefore, he could make the trip to his abode in hours. Jesus could also have equally sent His word to heal Lazarus – it wouldn’t have been the first time He used that approach. But He did neither, instead choosing to stay two more days in his current location.
The only reasonable explanation would have been that He did not really love Lazarus and the family as much as scripture claimed. For who would not drop whatever they were doing to attend to a loved one in difficulty? Someone who was claiming to be God would at least know this.
So we arrive at a dilemma, pondering on why God appears to stand back to permit certain situations or challenges to come our way. Based on the story of Lazarus, the reason is clear ” This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby (John 11:4).
We know God is able to work all things together for our good- so even the things intended for evil, can be routed through his mercy to end in good. Everything we go through therefore, is an opportunity for us to understand the nature and ways of God to a deeper extent. So while we may never exhaust our knowledge of His ways, we can be assured that the of it is for ‘our good’. Therefore, we can find rest.
