EQUIPPED FOR THE TASK

DAY 84

Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

On the feast of the Annunciation today, we read the visit of the Angel Gabriel to Mary, a brief conversation that resulted in a partnership through which Jesus was born. We zoom the scope of our lens in on Mary as we explore her preparation for the role of mothering the saviour of the world.

She was a rather young virgin, with quite little experience about her own life, even to factor in the prospect of nurturing another human beings Nonetheless, the verse today reveals to us that she received help from the helper- “the Holy Ghost shall come upon you and the power of the highest shall overshadow”. Almost as though that was her personal initial Pentecostal experience, where power to function was poured out.

At Mass today, I heard ‘God will not call us to do impossible things, but many of the things we will be asked to do will be difficult. However, He makes it possible for us to do those difficult things’. Therefore, just as with Mary, the patriarchs and prophets of old, or even the disciples after the passion of Christ, whatever assignment that God entrusts to men, we can be certain that He will provide the equipping and engracing needed to execute those assignments.
