A BOLD CLAIM

1John 5:5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

Some claims are bold, even bordering on preposterous. We encounter one of such today in the Epistle of John ‘belief in Jesus, the son of God is a necessary requirement to overcome the world’. Many will vehemently raise their opposition flags to this end ‘we are successful, and we do not even believe’.

But the world as we perceive it is not all contained solely in the physical sense, it encompasses systems, structures, ideologies and values. To overcome [ which means to rise above, to subdue or to vanquish] these systems and values, one needs to plugged in to a superior system that overrides or supercedes those the world holds.

This is where our reference to the words of Jesus comes to mind “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”(John 16:33).

“The overcoming” has therefore  already been done, it is only intended to be cascaded downwards to become a reality for anyone who believes.
