A TEMPLATE FOR FOLLOWERSHIP

288/365

Exodus 17:12 But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

Either Aaron or Hur could have asked Moses to give them the staff to wield as his hands grew weary. That would have been the equivalent of a handover of the mantle because for Moses, his rod was his symbol of authority. But they explored other options – bringing a stone and instead held his hands up while he wielded the rod.

That was an expression of honour for the place of Moses as leader, an acknowledgement of his authority, a respect of jurisdictions and an understanding of their individual roles towards ensuring that victory was attained. Those elements, form the core template of followership and that is what True followership should look like.

Instead, what we have are people claim to be following, but instead of lending their support, knowledge and strengths to those leading, they are actually only lying in wait to rather quickly take their place.

Regardless, it is worth thinking about our very own selves, pondering how many of us would honestly make this cut as followers if the template above is applied? If we fall short, now maybe the time to revisit our decisions and convictions.
