Luke 11:21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe

When last I read this text, the second part caught my attention- that it isn’t enough to be a strong man, that man also has to be armed with the right weapons. As I read the same text today, another layer came to mind: that it is not enough to just be fully armed, one ‘be guarding’.

In other words, it is very possible for a fully armed man to have his house broken into and his goods looted. There is an action that should follow being fully armed, and that is to guard. Because regardless of the weapons at ones disposal, that are nothing else but decorative pieces if they aren’t used as intended.

The questions then to ponder on are: do you know what weapons are in your arsenal and have you gained the requisite knowledge to operate them? We can therefore be armed to the teeth, counting every weapon known to us and yet in reality, be completely defenseless.

All three ingredients have to be at play: a strong man, fully armed, guarding his house. Only then can safety be guaranteed.
